Excellent vocabulary, grammar and punctuation are just some of the skills required of a scopist/editor. BIVR-accredited scopists have demonstrated the requisite level of understanding of these skills, as well as an ability to understand technology and use bespoke software, and, importantly, being able to work under pressure and as part of a team.

The terms “scopist” and “editor” are commonly used terms to describe someone who works alongside the stenographer, and they play an integral role in finalising the transcript, whether for same-day or delayed delivery. According to Scope School, an internet scoping school run by Linda Evenson: “Scoping is what the court reporting industry calls editing. If a court reporter is the writer, a scopist is the editor.”

  • I am an experienced verbatim reporter and scopist and if you require high-quality transcripts with a fast turn round, you need look no further! I can provide transcripts on a standard or expedited basis.
I hold an MA (Hons) degree in History from Edinburgh University. I also hold a Diploma for Graduate Secretaries from Napier College, Edinburgh.
I trained as a court reporter in Scotland, where I worked in the civil and criminal courts for William Hodge Ltd. In 1991 I joined WB Gurney & Sons and worked predominantly in the Houses of Parliament in London, producing edited transcripts for select committees and parliamentary Bills. From 2007 Gurney’s acquired a variety of new clients, including regulatory bodies, government departments and legal and financial firms, and I attended and produced transcripts on a write-out/overnight/delayed basis.
In 2016, I became a partner of W B Gurney & Sons. As well as continuing to produce transcripts as a stenographer, I developed skills in business planning, quality management, marketing, training and cloud management and storage.
Gurney’s was acquired by Auscript Ltd in March 2016 and I became a freelance stenographer and transcriber. I use a Stenograph Luminex with Case Catalyst software but am able to provide transcripts in Word format and/or clients’ own templates.
I attend or dial in to a wide variety of assignments: parliamentary committees, court hearings, seminars, disciplinary hearings, for public and private sector clients. I transcribe from audio civil and Crown Court proceedings, regulatory hearings, inquests and police interviews.
I gained accredited scopist status in September. I edit and proofread transcripts for Hansard, the General Synod of the Church of England and the Commonwealth Foundation.
I have been security cleared by Parliament to attend the Houses of Parliament. I hold a current DBS certificate.
I have covered parliamentary proceedings throughout this year. All remote. I have produced edited transcripts of select committee hearings.
I have covered CoE Synod - remotely
I have covered several seminars/workshops in Parliament and for private clients - all remote
