Aribitrations (Real-time, Rough Draft, Same Day/Overnight and Delayed), Depositions (Real-time, Rough Draft, Same Day/Overnight and delayed), Conferences, Court Reporting, Broadcast Captioning, Disciplinary Hearings, Public Inquiries, Verbatim STT.
I arrived in the UK from America in 1979 to work at the Old Bailey (Central Criminal Court) “for a year”. During that time I worked on many high-profile cases, including reporting the medical evidence in the “Yorkshire Ripper” trial and heading a team providing daily transcripts during the “Guinness” trials.
In the early 1980s I was head-hunted for a job in the Northern Ireland Court Service. My duties included consulting with educators who were setting up a court reporting course and also to introduce computer-aided transcription (CAT), then in its infancy, to the Northern Ireland courts. My work during this time included many of the high-security Diplock trials dealing with terrorists and the crimes they committed.
In the mid-1980s I returned to London to take up my role as one of three partners awarded the contract for court reporting services at the Old Bailey. During this five-year term I introduced CAT to the Central Criminal Court, training all reporters in the firm on the system whilst continuing to report court cases. It was during this time I gained my experience and expertise in real-time reporting.
I headed the first-ever team of stenographers to report live from Wimbledon, providing the press with verbatim transcripts of players’ post-match interviews. I also was privileged to attend the London 2012 and Sochi 2014 Olympics, again providing verbatim transcripts of press meetings.
When the BBC decided to provide live closed-captioning for its News programmes in the late 1980s, I worked with the BBC to find stenographers capable and skilled enough for this demanding work and I was the first of many real-time captioners to work at the BBC to provide this service.
Arbitrations, Depositions (real-time and standard delivery), Courts-martials, Disciplinary hearings, Live subtitles, Conferences, Verbatim speech-to-text – I can turn my hand to anything. My output is high-quality, and doing the best job possible is always my goal.
